Go through a small gate and follow the path around the edge of the field, with a line of trees on the right, heading towards a farm in the distance. Ilam village and Dovedale are near Thorpe village about 5 miles (8km) north-west of Ashbourne. 4 to 5 wasn't much better. Go through the large black metal gate into the parkland. Cross over the metal bridge and head towards a squeeze stile to the left of a solitary tree. So at 0545 hours Dan and I set off from my home for the 161 mile drive to Ilam. Once over a cattle grid, you'll pass River Lodge on your right. Ilam Park is about 5 miles from Ashbourne, in the Peak District National Park. After a few metres turn left onto a footpath. It then visits the stepping stones and Lovers Leap before returning to the car park. After admiring the views and the limestone cave, go back to the main path and continue uphill. The walk would be suitable for dogs as long as they can negotiate the squeeze and fence stiles (see gallery). This amazing trail takes you along the River Dove to Milldale, allowing you to take in the impressive limestone features of Lover's Leap, Tissington Spires and Dove Holes.
